Private lessons are with the dog and the owner. If there are two owners and both are available, both are welcome to be present for the lessons.
Private lessons are lots of fun for the owner and their dog. You are actually being coached at home to learn how to work together with your dog as your partner. There is a very strong bond that forms between owner and dog during private lessons that is very special.
Since you will be the primary handler and not the trainer, you will see from day one a difference in the way your dog sees you and reacts to you. At the end of each session, the trainer will review what you've covered and leave you with handouts that will help you during the coming week as you continue your training and work with your dog. Help is always available by phone or email as you work with your dog in case you need it.
Our goal is to teach you how to continue the training so your dog has continuing success in the home.
We are available by phone or email at any time to answer any questions and offer support.

This program is a non-competitive program open to all dogs, purebred and mixed breeds alike. It tests your dog on the ten essential skills every well-mannered dog should know. To prepare for taking the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, we offer a specialty class. Dogs and their owners will be introduced to and will train for the ten essential skills on the CGC test.
BENEFITS OF CGC CERTIFICATE:
- May help with gaining acceptance of your dog in apartment buildings & condominiums where owning dogs may have become an issue after incidents of property damage or nuisance behaviors such as barking have occurred with other tenants dogs.
- Some of the country's largest service and therapy-dog organizations require dogs to pass the CGC Test as a pre-requisite for this type of work.
- As of 2009, 40 of our 50 states and the US Senate have passed Canine Good Citizen resolutions, showing that our nation's legislators support the AKC CGC Program as a means of increasing responsible dog ownership and ensuring well-mannered dogs remain welcome in our communities.
Attending a group class to teach your dog these essential skills actually works better than training at home because it introduces distractions to your dog, but in a controlled manner. These are intermediate and advanced obedience and manners skills, your dog needs opportunities to demonstrate self-control and calmness in the presence of other dogs and people. You and your dog will be introduced to situations in a controlled environment first, in order to work on your socialization and other skills. Once you and your dog are comfortable and working well in the controlled environment, we increase the difficulty level. Distractions and more challenging situations are added when you and your dog are ready.
After passing the CGC test, you are eligible to apply for your frameable AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate.
The Canine Good Citizen program is just one of the many ways the American Kennel Club helps and supports dog owners and their dogs learn how to be responsible dog/owner teams.
Training usually progresses much faster as the dog is getting trained 2-3 times a week, as opposed to only one time per week.
All training sessions last one hour. Additional time is charged in 15 minute increments.
If you have two or more dogs in your family, please inquire about our "pack" rates.

Testimonial from a happy client:
"I don't know what you've done...! Our dogs like the tub so well now, that as I type, one of them is sleeping in it. He's way too big for it, but seems to really like it. This is a long ways from them not liking to get in the tub at all! Thanks again for all you do.

Koda, German Shepherd rescue:

Koda's people contacted me to help with basic obedience and they wanted her to ride calmly in the car. You can see the tension in Koda's expression above. She would scream, howl and whine loudly throughout any car ride, no matter how long, and if she saw a person, cat or dog, she'd go crazy with barking.
Koda was an A+ student! She loved her obedience and manners training sessions, and was soon obeying commands with style and enthusiasm.
Her car riding was still proving difficult however. We had a couple of sessions with me riding in the backseat with Koda and using counter-conditioning and desensitization techniques, but it was clear that there was just too much stimulation for Koda and she felt a lot of anxiety and frustration.
I offered Koda's parents the use of a crate, and it was just what Koda had been needing! Sharon writes:
Hi Erica,
We're back. We only went a few blocks around the neighborhood. I put the sheet over the crate except where I was on the side. I talked to her and gave her treats when she laid down. You hit the nail on the head when you said the outside stimulation is too much for her. Although she whined some, there was no screaming, barking or out of control behavior.
When we put the crate in the back of my car she jumped right in. I have a strong feeling this dog has been crated before, as she's not afraid of it at all. And, like you said, she seems secure in there, and although she stands, she has the crate to lean on. We'll try it again tomorrow.
When we got home she ran around the yard a few times, got a big drink of water, and now she's on the window seat finding it hard to keep her eyes open.

Koda's car rides continue to improve. Another issue her humans were concerned about, since she was adopted and not much was known about her background, was how she would get along with other dogs. We had some great meet-and-greets on the beach, and I recommended they start taking Koda a couple times a week to a friendly doggie daycare. I attended Koda's first visit to meet the daycare owner and her dog, and the dogs had a blast. Sharon reports that Koda loves riding in the car now and particularly loves going to Pokee's Place Doggy Daycare for daycare and boarding.
"Koda is going to Pokee's Place tomorrow to play with her doggie friends. She continues to be a great rider as long as she is in her crate, which she loves. Thank you so much.
We took her on a walk today and a big black dog ran up to us, we let them greet each other and it was a "non-event." What a change. Oh yes, the owner of the house came out and said her dog was friendly, which she was."
